What We Do The operative terms are Military Families, North Camp Pendleton and Emergency. Our mission is to support military families in need. Because of the proximity to Camp Pendleton, most are U.S. Marine and Navy families stationed at San Onofre, Camp San Mateo, School of Infantry and other units based in North Camp Pendleton. Military families in this locale tend to be isolated from many of the services routinely available mainside at Oceanside, and services provided by SCMFO are, for the most part, in response to an emergency need. These needs may include, but are not limited to, groceries, gas, diapers, formula, infant clothing, school supplies, dental treatment, children’s prosthetics, car repairs, and compassionate help to bridge the gap and counter other unexpected threats to the fanily’s welfare. If a family is in dire financial condition, we usually refer them first to Navy and Marine Corps Relief, who can provide financial counsel, budget planning and some no-interest loans. Those who do not qualify, however, find a safety net in Military Family Outreach and a call to our Assistance line at 949-388-2812. Through SCMFO resources and partnering with other charitable agencies, the office can usually provide a call-back within 24 hours. A low key one-on-one interview with an SCMFO intake person can begin a pathway to successful resolution of the crisis. In addition to dealing daily with emergency situations, SCMFO sponsors or supports several scheduled “morale events” during the year. These include distributing Easter baskets, adopting classrooms at San Onofre school for replenishment of critical school supplies, distributing over 1,000 turkeys and traditional meals at Thanksgiving, and a “Thank a Family” program at Christmas time that pairs struggling families with donors in the community. The outreach is always seeking other “targets of opportunity” for aiding dependents such as baby showers for expecting Moms.
